Zoji La Pass

Zoji La is a high mountain pass in the Indian state of Jammu Kashmir and Ladakh, At an elevation of 3,528 mt (11,575 ft) above the sea level, located on National Highway 1 between Leh and Srinagar in the western section of the Himalayan mountain range.

Zoji La pass is about 102 kilometers from Srinagar, the state capital in summer, and 15 km from Sonmarg. It provides a vital link between Ladakh Valley and Kashmir Valley. It runs at an altitude of approximately 3,528 metres (11,575 ft), Zoji La pass is the second highest pass after Fotu La on the Leh - Srinagar National Highway. It is completely closed during winter months, though the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) is working to extend traffic to more period in winter. The Beacon Force unit of the Border Roads Organisation BRO is responsible for clearing and maintenance of the road. The pass is often closed during winter The road over the pass is termed as the gateway to the Ladakh. Zoji La is one the lifeline that keeps the people of Ladakh in touch with the rest of the world.

Zoji La Tunnel

In january 2018 Zoji La tunnel, project was approved by the government of India. The commencement of its construction was inaugurated by the prime minister, Narendra Modi in May 2018. The 14 kilometers long tunnel will reduce the time to cross the Zojila Pass from more than 3 hours to just 15 minutes. The initial cost of the Zoji La tunnel is US$930 million. It will be the longest bi-directional tunnel in India, Asia when completed.
